Medtronic MiniMed Overview
Medtronic MiniMed Inc. and Becton Dickenson have developed the first device
for the treatment of diabetes which integrates a glucose meter,
an insulin dispensing pump - supported by the patented Softserter
system - and a dose calculator into one device. This new Medtronic
device is the first step in the development of a fully integrated
system that automatically will deliver insulin as needed to the
user.
The Medtronic Mini Med system has been cleared by the Food and Drug
Administration. The new Mini Med system now has the ability to
automatically calculate and exchange information between the glucose
meter and the insulin pump so errors can be eliminated, thus making
it easier for patients to manage their insulin requirements. Medtronic
Minimed Inc. has pioneered a breakthrough with this device which
could be the forerunner of a fully automated system in the management
of insulin levels for diabetics.
